#peacehack is an initiative of International Alert that brings together technologists, designers, developers and peace practitioners to create and realise ideas and solutions that can be used to stop violent conflict and help build peace.
Following on from the success of last year’s first ever #peacehack, a non-stop hackathon over two days, the event will go global in 2015. In line with the Talking Peace Festival’s theme of ‘peace in our cities’, #peacehacks are happening in Barcelona, Beirut, Colombo, Derry, London, Medellín and Washington DC in September.
All the hackathons will focus on developing groundbreaking ideas for using technology to build peace in cities, while exploring the challenges particular to each urban context – for example violent extremism in London and infrastructure in Lebanon.
Some of the prototype solutions emerging from the hacks may be developed; others may not. Nonetheless, we believe the hacks can be the seed for future collaborations; the beginning of a movement where practitioners and technologists work together for peace.
